Dad: “I understand”
(pause)
“I’m ready”
(pause)
“Yes, I know you’re here”
(long pause… he was listening)
Dad: “It’s okay”
(this was said as a reassurance, to comfort whomever was speaking)
“It’s okay. I’m ready”
(I wait… curiosity gets the better of me )
Me: “I’m here dad”
(no answer)
Me: “It’s your daughter”
(perturbed answer)
Dad: “Yes, I know”
Clearly not talking in his sleep. I felt like I was intruding and crept out of the bedroom. There was no longer a conversation to my knowledge.
He died the next day.
